Volta ao Algarve 2025: The Route

Volta ao Algarve 2025The 2025 Volta ao Algarve served up a hilly stage, a mountain stage, and two chances for the fast men, before a time trial with a punchy final climb wrapped things up. The race started on Wednesday, 19 February, and finished on Sunday, the 23rd.

Stage 1 is the familiar opener from Portimão to Lagos, where Gerben Thijssen sprinted to victory last year. The race covers 190 kilometres and packs in around 1,500 metres of climbing.

Stage 2 finishes, just like last year, at the highest point of the Algarve, the Fóia. This time, though, the climb is tackled from the northern side, which is much tougher. Gradients range between 11% and 15% in the middle section, while the final 2.9 kilometres climb at 7.5%. Over a distance of 167.6 kilometres, the stage serves up more than 2,700 metres of climbing.

The sprinters get another shot in stage 3, a 184.5-kilometre race with over 1,500 metres of climbing, before stage 4 has the potential to shake up the GC. The hilly route from Albufeira to Faro is more likely to favour attackers, though. The 175.2-kilometre stage features 2,500 metres of elevation gain, with the last peak 17 kilometres before an uphill home straight.

The Volta ao Algarve wraps up with a time trial. Stage 5 opens with a flat 17-kilometre stretch before the riders take on the Alto do Malhão, a 2.6-kilometre climb with an average gradient of 9.3%.
