Let’s hope the battle for the overall victory in the Tour de France is still raging when the riders clip into their pedals in Albertville. It’s unlikely that the GC riders will attack early on, but the opening offers plenty of opportunities for an exciting fight for the breakaway. After all, attackers never know if the break is going to stick till the end, so better just give it a shot.
After 8 kilometres of false flat, the route heads up the Côte d’Héry-sur-Ugine, an 11.3-kilometre climb averaging 5.1%. Following a negligible descent, the route continues straight onto the Col des Saisies: 13.7 kilometres at 6.4%.
A 17-kilometre descent brings the riders to the foot of the Col du Pré. Together with the final climb, this is the only HC challenge of the day, consisting of 12.6 kilometres of climbing at 7.7%. The hardest section starts at kilometre 6, with the road climbing steadily for 7 kilometres at 9.4%.
There is hardly any descent after cresting the Col du Pré either, as the Cormet de Roselend throws in 5.9 kilometres at 6.3% shortly ater. At the summit, there are still 51.4 kilometres to go.
Via a long descent and a stretch through the valley, the riders reach the foot of the final climb. This ascent covers 19.1 kilometres at 7.2% to La Plagne. It’s a long but straightforward test in which the last climbing finish of this year’s Tour is contested.
How the race unfolds depends on the standings, so we will update this article as the Tour progresses.
