The road goes predominantly uphill in the first 87.5 kilometres. The race starts at 110 metres above sea level and it peaks out at the Passo delle Radici, at an elevation of 1,521 metres. It’s a sheer endless drag that’s interspursed with flat sections and some downhills, but overall the route goes up in the first two hours.
For the sprinters’ teams that’s not an option to keep the breakaway within range, but the team mates of the likes of Matthews and Pedersen may give it a try. Although it may be a more fruitful approach for sprinters with climbing legs to join the breakaway themselves.
After cresting the Passo delle Radici the riders enter a long descent before the last 70 kilometres are as good as flat.
