The hilly opening of the race is packed with ammunition for a compelling battle for the breakaway. A series of climbs takes the riders to the village of Pedaggera at kilometre 36. The route then descends to a flat section of roughly 80 kilometres to the base of the Colle Braida.
As mentioned, the Colle Braida is 9.8 kilometres long and averages 7.1%. The second half is the hardest part, as it throws in the 8 to 9% gradients.
The first riders over the Colle Braida are likely to battle it out for the stage win.
The route descends from the Colle Braida to a predominantly flat section of 20 kilometres before the ultimate kilometre holds a small suprise up its sleeve. The riders descend on the narrow Via I Maggio to turn left onto the Corso Einadi. It's important to not lose speed in that corner, as the road starts to rise at 8% right away. The finish lies 700 metres on the flat further.
