Volta a Catalunya 2025 Route stage 2: Banyoles – Figueres
Banyoles last hosted the Volta a Catalunya in 2021, but Figueres has not seen a professional peloton for a much longer period. The last time a stage finished there was in 1968, when Eddy Merckx's domestique, Roger Swerts, celebrated victory. However, the relationship between the Volta a Catalunya and Figueres dates back many years. In 1923, José Pelletier won the 3rd stage of the 5th edition of the race in the birthplace of Salvador Dalí
Following such a long period without any major cycling races, Figueres will host two major events this year. First, the finish of the 2nd stage of the Volta a Catalunya, and this autumn, the Vuelta a España will feature a team time trial starting and finishing in the town northeast of Girona.
There's a good chance a sprinter will follow in Roger Swerts' footsteps. The route includes 1,800 metres of elevation, primarily concentrated in two mid-race climbs: first the Coll del Puig de Pení, then the Coll de Sant Pere de Rodes, measuring 4.8 kilometres at 5% and 7.7 kilometres at 6.4%, respectively. The rest of the route isn't entirely flat, but it doesn't present more than gentle inclines.
The first three riders to cross the finish line bag time bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 bonus seconds, while the intermediate sprints offer 3, 2, and 1 seconds.
