Race report
Samuele Zoccarato, Sinuhé Fernández, Quentin Bezza, and Pau Llanares initiate the breakaway. The latter struggles to keep up with the pace, and Vicente Rojas and Matyáš Kopecký take his place.
The five attackers open a generous gap, but by the time they reach the foot of the Coll de Rates, that advantage has shrunk to just 2 minutes. At the summit, Kopecky does win the KOM sprint, but once at the base of the next climb, the peloton is back together.
Tobias Foss launches an attack and leads the climb all the way. The Norwegian reaches the summit first, but his lead is small.
Iván Romeo and Pello Bilbao chase down Foss to tackle the final climb half a minute ahead of the chasers.
Foss is the first to lose contact, followed later by Romeo. In the group behind, yellow jersey Mathias Vacek is dropped.
Meanwhile, Santiago Buitrago breaks away from the remaining chasers and rejoins his teammate Bilbao. The Colombian leaves the Spaniard behind and wins the race. Almost 1 minute later, Vacek crosses the line with foam on his lips. The Czech has pushed hard, and his reward is well deserved: he retains the yellow jersey.
