Saturday, 15 March – The 6th stage is the hardest of this year’s Tirreno-Adriatico. The riders take on 3,653 metres of elevation gain over a 166-kilometre course. It's the only mountain top finish of the week after a 7.6-kilometre climb with an average gradient of 8%.
The route is fairly straightforward. The first 120 kilometres are packed with a a series of short climbs, before the riders tackle two longer ascents in the final part of the race.
The most eye-catching of the short climbs are crested after 9.7 kilometres (4.1 kilometres at 4.4%); after 25.9 kilometres (2.8 kilometres at 6.5%); after 35.2 kilometres (1.9 kilometres at 6.2%); after 41.4 kilometres (3.5 kilometres at 6.6%); after 61.8 kilometres (2 kilometres at 7.5%); after 73.9 kilometres (740 metres at 12%); after 95.5 kilometres (5.7 kilometres at 5%); and after 101 kilometres (2.7 kilometres at 4.4%).
The riders crest that last climb in Torrone before a rolling downhill takes them to the intermediate sprint in Pieve Torina. At that point, 46 kilometres remain.
From there, the road gradually ascends towards the foot of the Passo delle Arette. The climb starts off brutally – with 2.1 kilometres at 9.1% – before easing off with a short descent that brings down the average gradient. Over its full 7.4-kilometre length, the Arette averages 4%.
After descending from the Arette and a short stint on the valley floor, the final climb adds 7.6 kilometres at 8% to the mix.
Finish venue Ussita Frontignano is a small ski resort in the Marche region, located at 1,327 metres above sea level.
The first three riders across the line gain 10, 6, and 4 bonus seconds, while 3, 2, and 1 seconds are up for grabs at the intermediate sprint.
