The final stage begins with two short laps, followed by two big loops to the east of Leuven. Then it’s back to three times the opening lap for the finale.
The road rises once in the neutral zone. The Keizersberg kicks up at 5.6% over 300 metres, and shortly after the start, the 1.1-kilometre Leopold Decouxlaan (3.4%) and the Wijnpersstraat (300 metres at 8.3%) make their presence felt.
The first passage across the finish line comes after just 8.3 kilometres. Riders then take on the Keizersberg–Leopold Decouxlaan–Wijnpersstraat trio once more before heading into the first large loop, which features the Heidebergstraat (900 metres at 5.6%), Muur van Houwaart (500 metres at 8.1%), Chartreuzenberg (900 metres at 5.9%), plus the Keizersberg–Leopold Decouxlaan–Wijnpersstraat trio .
The second large lap mirrors the first, while the race concludes with three laps of the tried-and-tested city circuit, each including the Keizersberg, Leopold Decouxlaan and Wijnpersstraat. The latter tops out just 5.5 kilometres from the line on Leuven’s Bondgenotenlaan.
Leuven is the birthplace of Jasper Stuyven. Four years ago, he dreamed of winning the rainbow jersey in ‘his city’, only to finish fourth behind Julian Alaphilippe, Dylan van Baarle and Michael Valgren.
The World Championships road race also ended on a Leuven circuit. Besides the Keizersberg, Leopold Decouxlaan and Wijnpersstraat, that course also included the Sint-Antoniusberg. On that narrow, cobbled ramp Alaphilippe made the decisive move.
The Green Kilometre – with three intermediate sprints worth 3, 2 and 1 bonus seconds within 1,000 metres – begins 22 kilometres from the finish. More bonuses are on offer at the line: 10, 6 and 4 seconds for the first three riders.
