O Gran Camiño 2024 Route stage 1: A Coruña ITT
Thursday 22 February - O Gran Camiño 2024 kicks off with an individual time trial of 14.8 kilometres in A Coruña. The fast course is flat to undulating.
[Pre-race update – no times will be taken due to the strong winds, yet, the winner will take the leader’s jersey]
The start podium is situated near the Tower of Hercules in A Coruña, which is the oldest operating lighthouse in the world. It was constructed in the 1st century and stands on a peninsula 2.4 kilometres from the city centre.
The course starts out far from technical and breakneck speeds are to be expected. The riders hardly have to touch their brakes as the wide turns allows one to hold high speeds. That is, until the uphill section in the middle part throws in 1.4 kilometres of climbing at 4%, while some stretches at 7% will pose a challenge to the pure specialists.
The riders continue onto a cobbled section of 3 kilometres along the shores of the Atlantic, which is partly a false flat. The cobbles are done and dusted 4.3 kilometres to go and the riders fly back to the Tower of Hercules. The last 400 metres go up again – at around 4% on a surface of uneven cut stone slabs.
The only intermediate time check is situated at kilometre 4.2 – at the highest point of the only climb.
Duarte Domingues is the first rider to starts at 14:45 CET and the last rider, Jonas Vingegaard, is expected to finish at around 17:10 CET. See also: start times ITT.
