Race report
As the riders hit the Montoso, the peloton is still all together, but the climb immediately ignites the race. The GC contenders drop the rest and by the summit the lead group consists of pink jersey Anna van der Breggen, Demi Vollering, Elisa Longo Borghini, Antonia Niedermaier, Lauren Dickson, Niamh Fisher-Black and Isabella Holmgren.
Approaching the Colletta di Paesana, Antonia Niedermaier, Elisa Longo Borghini and Niamh Fisher-Black go on the attack. Over the top, Niedermaier is effectively in the virtual pink jersey, with the trio cresting the climb around 2 minutes clear of Demi Vollering and Anna van der Breggen.
On the final climb of the Giro, the Colletta di Brondello, the gap falls to 1 minute and 30 seconds. Vollering then launches an attack on the final part of the climb. She puts the pink jersey wearer 25 seconds behind and, in the process, also brings down the gap to the three leaders. Even so, they still hold a 56-second advantage over her at the summit.
The 2023 Tour winner launches a determined chase of the leaders and makes the catch with 28 kilometres remaining. At that point, Anna van der Breggen is already a minute and a half down, and the gap only continues to grow. As a result, the overall victory slips from her grasp.
In the sprint for the stage win, it comes down to Elisa Longo Borghini and Niamh Fisher-Black. The Italian takes the honours, while Demi Vollering crosses the line 3 seconds behind her, also celebrating.
Vollering wins the Giro d'Italia Women by 34 seconds over Antonia Niedermaier, while Anna van der Breggen has to settle for third place.
