Race report
It takes a long time for a break to go clear, but as the Colle delle Finestre comes into view, the move finally sticks. Sixteen riders head onto the brutal climb with a 2-minute advantage over the peloton before being caught by the GC group with stil over 13 kilometres to climb.
With 6 kilometres to go, the riders are informed that the finish will not, as planned, be in Sestriere on the other side of the Finestre, but instead 1 kilometre before the summit. The reason is that the road has become impassable due to a snow slide.
It doesn’t take long before Demi Vollering ups the pace, and only Antonia Niedermaier, pink jersey Anna van der Breggen and Isabelle Holmgren are able to follow. Holmgren is the first to be distanced, but she fights her way back inside the final 4 kilometres.
The four stay together for the remainder of the climb, before Demi Vollering powers to her second stage win of this Giro. Anna van der Breggen finishes fourth and keeps hold of the pink jersey.
