Giro 2025 Route stage 12: Modena – Viadana

Giro d'Italia 2025Thursday, 22 May – The 12th stage takes the Giro riders on a 172-kilometre journey from Modena to Viadana. A lumpy middle section shouldn’t dampen the spirits of the knights of the purple jersey, as the rest of the route is as flat as a curling rink.

The ties of the starting venue, Modena, to the automotive industry run deep. Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati have all left their mark on this vibrant university city. A fitting nod to the stage itself. Eager fast men will be ready and willing on the start line.

Nevertheless, there are some bumps in the road. The climbing begins after 35 kilometres with a 5.1-kilometre ascent at 5.7% climb to Baiso, which rolls straight into another 4.5-kilometre section at 3.6%t. Following a lumpy stretch and some downhill action, the riders face a short but punchy climb. The 2.4-kilometre wall to Trinità averages 8.3%.

From there, it’s a 10-kilometre descent before the final obstacle of the day: a 3.4-kilometre climb to Rossena at 6.1%. Once over the top, there’s a bit of false flat, but by kilometre 90, all the uphill metres are done and dusted for the day. After the descent, it’s pancake-flat roads to Viadana, including a flat local circuit to wrap things up.

Viadana is a small town making its Giro debut. In fact, it’s never hosted a cycling event of any kind before. The only connection to cycling is that Riccardo Riccò, infamous for his doping scandals, hails from nearby Formigine – hardly a legacy to boast about.

Let’s hope stage 12 injects a cycling sparkle into quiet little Viadana.
