Giro 2025 Route stage 17: San Michele all’Adige - Bormio
The route climbs from the gun - never steep, but a drag that stretches over tens of kilometres. The gradient steepens as the riders tackle the Passo Tonale at kilometre 54. The 15.2-kilometre climb averages 6%.
From the top, the riders descend to Ponte di Legno and follow the Oglio Valley downstream to Monno. Here, the Passo del Mortirolo awaits. While this is considered the easier side of the climb, that’s all relative – it’s still a gruelling 12.6-kilometre ascent at an average gradient of 7.6%, with the final 2.6 kilometres ramping up to nearly 10%. From the summit, there are roughly 50 kilometres left to race.
The descent leads to Grosio in the Adda Valley. The riders follow the river upstream for a while towards Bormio. But just before reaching the finishing venue, the route takes a detour via Le Motte. The final 3 kilometres before the ski village climb at 8.2%.
From Le Motte, the riders descend for 9 kilometres to the finish in Bormio.
The Giro last finished in Bormio in 2017. That stage became memorable when pink jersey Tom Dumoulin had to make an emergency roadside stop just before the final climb, the Umbrail Pass. Vincenzo Nibali won the stage, beating Mikel Landa in a two-up sprint.
The final intermediate sprint comes 130.1 kilometres into the race, with 6, 4 and 2 bonus seconds up for grabs; at the finish line, 10, 6 and 4 seconds await the first three riders.
