Race report
Following 40 kilometres of relentless attacking, a sizeable group breaks clear. They tackle the Passo Tonale 3 minutes ahead of the peloton and reach the summit with the same lead. KOM leader Lorenzo Fortunato bags most points
Near the summit of the Mortirolo, the breakaway still features Daniel Felipe Martínez, Mattia Cattaneo, Romain Bardet, Brandon McNulty, Chris Harper, Georg Steinhauser, Afonso Eulálio, Florian Stork, and Lorenzo Fortunato. On the lower slopes, Simon Yates, Egan Bernal and Isaac del Toro lose ground when Giulio Pellizzari ups the pace in the peloton. They claw their way back, but then Richard Carapaz accelerates.
The Ecuadorian crests the summit 2 minutes and 30 seconds behind the leaders, with the other GC contenders trailing a further 20 seconds back.
Back on the valley floor, Cattaneo, Bardet and Eulálio lead the way, soon joined by Florian Stork and Lorenzo Fortunato. Later on, more survivors from the day’s breakaway latch on — Wilco Kelderman, Mathias Vacek and Daniel Felipe Martínez.
In the background, the GC contenders regroup — all except Antonio Tiberi, who was dropped early on the Mortirolo. Their deficit to the leaders is around 2 minutes at first, but by the foot of the Le Motte climb it’s down to 30 seconds.
Bardet pushes on alone on the climb, while pink jersey holder Del Toro accelerates just before the summit. Carapaz immediately jumps onto his wheel, the rest are unable to follow.
The two catch Bardet inside the last 5.5 kilometres, after which Del Toro drops the other two with 1.5 kilometres remaining.
In the twisty finale, the Mexican powers to victory. He finishes 4 seconds ahead of Bardet and Carapaz, and 15 seconds ahead of the other GC contenders. In doing so, he strengthens his grip on the maglia rosa.
