Race report
Felix Engelhardt, Ben Turner, Manuele Tarozzi, Josef Cerny, Michel Ries, and KOM leader Lorenzo Fortunato initiate the breakaway, while Lorenzo Germani tracks them down. They open a 1-minute lead, but the gap narrows again when Mathias Vacek, Joshua Tarling, Davide Formolo, Jan Tratnik, and Lucas Hamilton take up the chase — with the peloton chasing the chasers.
The race comes back together after 30 kilometres of action, and then Taco van der Hoorn sets off with Enzo Paleni in tow. The two open up a 3-minute lead before Lorenzo Fortunato and Lucas Hamilton give chase on the Valico di Monte Carruozzo. The King of the Mountains soon drops his companion to chase down the other two. He takes 18 points at the summit before sitting up and waiting for the peloton.
The breakaway riders open up a maximum lead of 5 minutes, while rain starts to fall as the stage progresses. As a result, the roads in southern Italy become treacherously slippery, leading to a major crash in the peloton. Jai Hindley, Dion Smith and Juri Hollmann come off worst and are forced to abandon, while the race is temporarily neutralised.
With 60 kilometres remaining, the race restarts. The breakaway’s lead is down to 1 minute at that point.
As the finishing times don’t count due to the wet conditions, and with no maglia ciclamino points on offer either, maglia rosa Mads Pedersen decides to take it easy with 30 kilometres to go.
The two attackers hold a 30-second lead over the peloton with 6 kilometres to go. It’s not enough, though, as they are caught 3 kilometres later.
Just before the flamme rouge, Jensen Plowright opens up a gap and Wout van Aert gives chase. He overhauls the Australian and pushes on, but his effort comes to nothing when the sprinters open up their final burst. Olav Kooij is boxed in on the left-hand side, while Kaden Groves powers to a clear-cut victory down the centre
Mads Pedersen rolls in minutes later, but with times neutralised, he keeps hold of the maglia rosa.
