Race report
It’s non-stop attacking from the start, but no one manages to get away on the first climb. KOM leader Lorenzo Fortunato takes the mountain points at the summit in Roccaraso. Jay Vine accelerates and opens up a gap. Alessandro Tonelli, Gianmarco Garofoli, Nicolas Prodhomme and Christian Scaroni bridge across to him, but they are caught after 15 kilometres of action.
That is, Vine is swallowed up by the main group, while the other four push on. Paul Double, Manuele Tarozzi and Gijs Leemreize jump across. The seven open up a 4-minute gap.
While pink jersey Mads Pedersen takes it easy on the final climb and Romain Bardet, who crashed earlier in the day, is unable to keep up with the pace, Tonelli, Garofoli, Prodhomme and Tarozzi are the last attackers to be reeled in, 5 kilometres from the finish.
As the climb steepens in the final kilometres, Giulio Ciccone and Egan Bernal try to jump clear, but without success. It looks set to come down to a sprint, until Juan Ayuso opens a gap with 400 metres to go. The Spaniard immediately opens up a gap and powers on to take the win, 4 seconds ahead of his team-mate Isaac del Toro and Egan Bernal. Primoz Roglic crosses the line in fourth place, which sees the Slovenian reclaim the pink jersey.
