Race report
After 10 kilometres of freewheeling, four Danes launch the first attack: Mads Pedersen, Kasper Asgreen, Jakob Fuglsang and Mikkel Honoré. That doesn’t last long, and soon the riders are calmly pedalling on again.

The pace quickens on the run-in to Rome, and once on the city circuit, Michael Hepburn attacks, with Martin Marcellusi, Alessandro Verre, Enzo Paleni, Josef Cerny and Andrea Pietrobon bridging across.

For kilometres on end, the six hover roughly 20 seconds in front of the bunch. The peloton brings the last attacker, Cerny, back with 6 kilometres to go.

Edoardo Affini and Wout van Aert then roll out the pink carpet for Olav Kooij, who sprints to a commanding stage win at the Giro. His teammate Simon Yates finishes safely in the peloton to secure overall victory, flanked on the final podium by Isaac Del Toro and Richard Carapaz.
