Race report
In a fast and furious opening, Mads Pedersen and Davide De Pretto chase down an early move by Mattia Cattaneo. The trio enjoys an advantage of roughly 20 seconds for tens of kilometres, while the riders behind continue to launch attacks in quick succession.

After the intermediate sprint in Roccafluvione, the front trio decides to call it a day.

Nairo Quintana, Alessandro Tonelli and Davide Piganzoli attack on the Croce di Casale. The gap remains modest until Wilco Kelderman, Romain Bardet and Louis Meintjes bridge across on the descent. Once again, the peloton refuses to let the break go, and with 125 kilometres to the finish, it’s all back together.

Kelderman pushes on alone, before he is joined by a large group, featuring Jonathan Lastra, Sylvain Moniquet, Nicolas Prodhomme, Andrea Vendrame, Damien Howson, Mattia Bais, Luke Plapp, Romain Bardet, Igor Arrieta, Diego Ulissi, Dylan van Baarle, Koen Bouwman, Georg Steinhauser, Davide Formolo, Rémy Rochas, Marco Frigo, Manuele Tarozzi, Stefano Oldani, and Lorenzo Fortunato.

Fortunato tightens his grip on the mountains classification atop the Valico di Santa Maria Maddalena by outsprinting Bardet. The two push on together, while Vendrame and Steinhauser bridge across on the descent. The others manage to rejoin the group later on.

Approaching the climb to Montelago, Ulissi, Vendrame, Steinhauser, Plapp, Bardet, Kelderman and Arrieta break clear – and just before the climb, Ulissi and Kelderman set off together. Arrieta and Plapp regain contact in the last 2 kilometres before Plapp puts in a dig with 600 metres remaining to the summit. By then, the peloton is 6 minutes in arrears.

The Australian puts more than 1 minute into the three chasers, while Arrieta shakes off the other two on a short rise, 20 kilometres from the finish. The three come together with 11 kilometres to go, while the young Spaniard is dropped on the punchy climb to Gagliole.

Meanwhile, Plapp powers on to take the best win in his career, with Kelderman outsprinting Ulissi for second place. The Italian, who started the stage 4:01 behind the pink jersey, takes over the overall lead from Primoz Roglic, as the peloton crosses the line 4 minutes and 12 seconds after him. Juan Ayuso finishes 1 second ahead of the bunch following a late attack.
