Race report
Kaden Groves, Dries De Bondt, Milan Fretin, and Quinten Hermans attack from the gun, while Taco van der Hoorn and Luke Lamperti set off in pursuit. They make the catch after a 20-kilometre chase.
The breakaway reaches a maximum lead of 3 minutes, before tackling the first sterrato 2 minutes ahead of the peloton.
Groves and Hermans are the last men standing as they hit the tarmac, but their advantage has fallen below the one-minute mark. Pink jersey Diego Ulissi has been dropped from the peloton.
As they turn onto the second gravel sector, Michael Storer hits the deck, and later Tom Pidcock and Primoz Roglic also go down. Moments later, the front of what’s left of the peloton reaches the two attackers, as Roglic suffers further misfortune with a flat tyre.
Riding on the San Martino in Grania gravel sector, the front group is made up of Wout van Aert, Egan Bernal, Isaac del Toro, Brandon Smith Rivera, and Thymen Arensman, as the Dutchman loses contact due to mechanical trouble. He ends up in a chasing group with Juan Ayuso, Antonio Tiberi, and Simon Yates.
Mathias Vacek is also in that group, but not for long — once back on the tarmac, the Czech closes the gap to the four leaders with a strong solo effort.
On the short fourth gravel sector, Del Toro accelerates and only Van Aert is able to follow. But once back on the tarmac, Bernal and Vacek latch back on.
Del Toro repeats the move on the Colle Pinzuto, and once again, Van Aert is the only one able to hold his wheel. The young Mexican bags 6 bonus seconds at the summit.
Del Toro is in pole position to take the pink jersey, while Van Aert tucks into his slipstream on the way to Siena. As the steep ramp to the Piazza del Campo levels out, the Flemish rider hits the front. He holds that position through the twisting finale and is first onto the square, claiming the spoils.
Del Toro has to console himself with the maglia rosa.
