Race report
Attacks fly from the start, and Jonathan Milan is among the riders dropped in the hills. Later, on the run-in to the intermediate sprint, Louis Barré makes a move, and Remco Evenepoel joins him. Tadej Pogacar doesn’t like that and before the sprint it comes together. That is, Barré earns 3 bonus seconds, Pogacar 2, and Evenepoel 1.

Barré forges on with Van der Poel, Florian Lipowitz, Axel Laurance, Michael Leonard, Maximilian Schachmann, Julien Bernard, Iván Romeo, Harold Tejada, Andreas Leknessund, Brieuc Rolland, Krists Neilands, Antony Turgis, and Eddie Dunbar coming along. They open up a lead of over 2 minutes, while Milan et al regain contact with the peloton ahead of the Côte de Malataverne.

The lead group tackles the Côte du Château Jaune 1 minute ahead of the peloton. Lipowitz, Bernard, Tejada, and Leknessund drop their companions, while Milan loses contact in the peloton.

Van der Poel and Barré are first to catch the quartet at the front, shortly followed by Romeo and the others. The 21-year-old Spaniard sets off with 6 kilometres to go. Metre by metre he pulls away from the rest.

The chase starts too late and Romeo solos to victory. He takes the yellow jersey, 17 seconds ahead of Barré and 18 seconds ahead of Tejada.
