Race report
Victor Campenaerts is the first to go on the offensive, but he’s allowed little space. Then Valentin Paret-Peintre and Bruno Armirail take their chances, while Matteo Jorgenson, Sergio Higuita, Ben Healy, Enzo Leijnse, Jordan Jegat, Torstein Træen, Clément Braz Afonso and Juan Guillermo Martinez try to bridge across to them. Again, the peloton doesn't allow that.

In a second attempt, Healy reaches the front with Sepp Kuss and Alexey Lutsenko, before Santiago Buitrago, Romain Bardet, Romain Combaud, Clément Braz Afonso, Juan Guillermo Martínez, Louis Meintjes, Jordan Jegat, Torstein Træen, Adreas Leknessund and Iván Romeo join them later. The peloton crests the Col de la Madeleine 1 minute after the breakaway.

Paret-Peintre loses contact with the other breakaway riders on the Col de la Croix de Fer. By the time they reach the summit, there’s not much left of the breakaway anyway. On the descent, Bardet makes a move, but the GC contenders are close behind.

While the other attackers are caught, Bardet increases his lead to nearly 1 minute on the descent. His solo effort comes to an end with 13 kilometres remaining on the final climb.

Tadej Pogacar attacks one kilometre later. Jonas Vingegaard tries to follow, but can’t hold on for long. The Dane is soon joined by Florian Lipowitz, but he keeps pressing on and eventually drops the German.

Vingegaard initially closes in on Pogacar, but then the gap widens again to around 30 seconds. In the final phase, it halves—not so much because the stage winner slows down, but rather because he takes his time crossing the line celebrating.
