Race report
Mathieu van der Poel and Ben Healy attack on Côte de Saint-Georges-d’Hurtières. The Dutchman loses contact and is replaced by Maxim Van Gils, Sepp Kuss, Enric Mas, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Lenny Martinez, Bruno Armirail, Iván Romeo, and Alexey Lutsenko.

On the descent, Mathieu van der Poel returns to the front, now accompanied by Jordan Jegat. Back in the valley, Guillaume Martin, Sergio Higuita, Tobias Foss, Jake Stewart and Mathys Rondel manage to bridge the gap. The twelve gains a maximum advantage of 4 minutes.

By the summit of the Col de Beaune, that gap has been almost halved. Stewart is no longer part of the front group at that point.

Mathieu van der Poel heads out alone in the run-up to the Côte de Saint-André. He opens up a 1-minute gap on the others and re-opens 3-minute lead over the peloton – a margin he maintains all the way to the summit of the Côte d’Aussois.

In the final 16 kilometres, Van der Poel sees his former breakaway companions surge past. At that moment, the peloton trails by a minute and a half.

With 6 kilometres left to climb, the breakaway is down to Mas, Healy and Martinez. Then Healy cracks under an acceleration by Mas. Martinez stays on the Spaniard’s wheel for a while before jumping clear in the final 3 kilometres of the climb.

Further down the mountain, Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar attack from a group that also includes Remco Evenepoel.

The two ride clear of the rest but make little effort to chase down Martinez. As a result, the young Frenchman takes the stage win, while Pogacar secures overall victory.
