Vuelta 2024 Route stage 1: Lisbon - Oeiras

Vuelta a España 2024Saturday 17 August - La Vuelta opens with an individual time trial along the mouth of the Tagus River. The riders set off from Lisbon and finish 12 flat kilometres later in in Oeiras.

The start podium is situated near the Belém tower, where the river flows into the ocean. The route is as flat as can be. Along the waterfront the riders storm towards the finish in Oeiras. The first taste is done and dusted close to the São Julião da Barra fortress, right next to Praia de Torre beach.

Last year’s Vuelta featured only one individual time trial. Except for a 600 metres climb, that course was flat as well, although it was much longer (25.8 kilometres). Filippo Ganna took the spoils 16 seconds ahead of Remco Evenepoel, while Primoz Roglic finished in third at 36 seconds.

It will be the fifth time in La Vuelta’s 89-year history that the race starts outside Spain. Lisbon also hosted the first foreign start in 1997. The race went to Estoril, where Lars Michaelsen outsprinted Claudio Chiappucci and Laurent Jalabert.
