Vuelta 2024 Route stage 2: Cascais - Ourém
Sunday 18 August - The riders travel on undulating terrain from Cascais to Ourém in the 2nd stage of the Vuelta a España. The route covers 194 kilometres.
Odds are that the fast men will showcase their talents for the first time this Vuelta in the streets of Ourém. Following the start in seaside town Cascais, to the west of Lisbon, the riders travel north. There are a lot of obstacles to overcome, but certainly no big climbs. The elevation gain adds up to almost 2,700 metres.
The riders tackle the first of two KOM climbs shortly after the start. The Alto do Lagoa is a 5.7 kilometres hill with an average gradient of 4.6%.
The second KOM is situated near the end, and a plentitude of small uphills line the route. A climb of 1.6 kilometres at 7.1% after roughly 60 kilometres for instance. Or a 2.1 kilometres test at 6.6% after 120 kilometres. Would be KOM material in a lot of races, but not so in La Vuelta.
In the run-up to the second KOM climb, the riders tackle a 2.2 kilometres slope with an average gradient of 5.1%. A short descent then precedes the actual KOM, Alto da Batalha, which stretches for 7.1 kilometres at 3.3%. There are 19.1 kilometres remaining from the summit to Ourém.
The old part of Ourém is perched on a hill, but the race finishes in the modern part, which is situated on the valley floor.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while there are 3, 2 and 1 seconds available at the intermediate sprint.
