Volta a Catalunya 2026: Evenepoels put on a show, Godon takes win

Race report

King of the Mountains Baptiste Veistrofer goes on the attack with Reuben Thompson, Diego Uriarte, Yago Aguirre, Josh Burnett and Mark Stewart. The six crest the Coll de la Mussara 2 minutes ahead of the peloton. Veistrofer takes the bulk of the mountain points at the summit and repeats the feat on the Coll de Capafons and Coll Roig. The gap has dropped to half a minute on that last climb.

With just over 30 kilometres to go, the breakaway is caught as the peloton splits in the wind. João Almeida wins up in the second echelon.

When Remco Evenepoel accelerates, Jonas Vingegaard follows him. The two open up a gap of 26 seconds, while the Belgian wins the intermediate sprint in Reus, where Brandon McNulty crosses the line third.

Evenepoel takes on virtually all the work load at the front, and the two enter the final kilometre with a 14-second advantage. Everything seems under control, but in the last 500 metres the Belgian suddenly crashes. Vingegaard does not keep pushing and is swallowed by the peloton, allowing overall leader Dorian Godon to sprint to a clear victory.
