Race report
Attacks fly on the climb from the start, and eventually Patrick Gamper, Stefan de Bod, Georg Steinhauser, Lorenzo Milesi and James Knox go over the top with a narrow advantage, which they widen gradually to nearly 3 minutes.
The peloton cuts the deficit easily to 2 minutes, but then the chase stalls. With 35 kilometres remaining, the breakaway riders are forced to press on without Knox.
By the time the four leaders plunge into the descent towards the coast, their lead has dropped to 1 minute. It is halved again heading into the final 6 kilometres. For a moment, things look promising for the quartet, but in the final 500 metres they are finally brought back.
Jonathan Milan then storms to a clear win. At the top of the general classification, nothing changes, with Antonio Tiberi retaining the leader’s jersey.
