Tour of the Alps 2025 Route stage 2: Mezzolombardo - Sterzing
Tuesday, 22 April – At 178 kilometres, the 2nd stage of the Tour of the Alps features 3,750 metres of elevation gain. Only the first 20 and the last 6 kilometres are flat; the rest of route is either climbing or descending.
Following the flat opening, the riders face the Monte San Petro – or, in German, Petersberg. This is a colossal climb of 19.1 kilometres with an average gradient of 6.1%. Midway through, the gradient reaches double digits for several kilometres, though the ascent also includes up some virtually flat sections.
After cresting the summit, the road briefly descends before rising again for 4.2 kilometres at 4.4%. From there, a 10-kilometre descent leads to the next ascent: 6.6 kilometres at 7.8%. At this point, the race is still only 62 kilometres in.
The following climb presents a 7.3-kilometre test at 7.2%. There is no descent after the ‘summit’. Instead, the route continues to rise as a false flat for 8 kilometres. Finally, the riders are treated to a downhill stretch. By now, they have reached the midway point of the stage.
The second half of the route begins with a false flat stretch spanning nearly 50 kilometres. This leads onto the climb to Telve di Sopra – Obertelfes in German –, a 4.2-kilometre ascent with an average gradient of 7%.
Since the Telve di Sopra climb is part of a finishing circuit, the riders tackle it again after 12 kilometres. Once they crest it for the second time, just 12 kilometres remain to the finish in Sterzing. Half of this is downhill, while the other half is flat.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
