Tour of the Alps 2025 Route stage 5: Lienz – Lienz
The race opens with a flat 37-kilometre section before the riders tackle the first climb in Arnold Schwarzenegger's birthplace, the town of Thal. The Bannberg is a demanding ascent of 4.4 kilometres at 9.1%. While the initial stretch is relatively easy, the gradient kicks into double digits from the third kilometre onward, making for a gruelling effort.
Immediately following the descent, the road steepens again with a 3.8-kilometre climb at 10.3% leading to Oberassling. By the time the riders crest the summit, they will have covered 50 kilometres.
The descent from Oberassling is interrupted by several uphill sections, the steepest of which climbs 1.1 kilometres at 8.5%. After this, the descent becomes more straightforward.
With more than 76 kilometres done, the riders return to Thal and face the Bannberg once more, ascending the same 4.4-kilometre stretch at 9.1%.
Following the descent and a flat section, the peloton arrives at the base of the stage’s final climb, leading to the tiny village of Stronach. This brutal ascent spans 3.1 kilometres with gradients of 11.7% in the first kilometre, 14.7% in the second, and 11.5% in the final stretch.
From the summit, 9 kilometres remain to the finish line, with half the distance a descent and the other half flat.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
