Tour Down Under 2025 Route stage 5: McLaren Vale - Willunga Hill
Starting in wine haven McLaren Vale, the race opens with a 70-kilometre lap featuring Wickham Hill (3-kilometre at 6.9%) after 21.5 kilometres. The route then winds through the enchanting seaside locales of Port Willunga and Aldinga Beach. This latter section is also part of the second lap, which is approximately 40 kilometres long.
Roughly 7 kilometres after moving trough McLaren Vale for the last time, the riders tackle the decisive Willunga Hill for the first of two ascents. The 3-kilometre climb at 7.4% serves up a maximum gradient of 11%. The summit is crested for the first time with 22.7 kilometres left to race, before it’s all systems go in the puncher’s dream of a finale on the Tour Down Under's trademark climb.
Richie Porte dominated Willunga Hill in the years 2014-2019 before being bested in 2020 by Matthew Holmes. Last year, the iconic finish climb returned after a 3-year hiatus, with Oscar Onley taking the spoils ahead of Stephen Williams and Jhonatan Narváez.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while two intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
