Race report
On the flat run-in to the Wildhaus climb seven riders forge a gap: Sam Oomen, Sander de Pestel, Louis Vervaeke, Lorenzo Germani, Axel Laurance, Simon Dalby and Marco Brenner, before Emiel Verstrynge, Jhonathan Narváez, Enric Mas, Jan Hirt, Finn-Fisher-Black, Aleksandr Vlasov, Felix Großschartner, Water Calzoni, Maximilian Schachmann, Darren van Bekkum and Paul Double bridge across on the climb.
The peloton does not agree and brings back the group shortly after the summit. The attacks continue unabated, however. Jhonatan Narváez has another go, this time with Michał Kwiatkowski and Xandro Meurisse. The Pole is unable to match the pace and drops into a chasing group featuring Antonio Tiberi, Emiel Verstrynge, Ewen Costiou, Aleksandr Vlasov, Maximilian Schachmann, Simon Dalby and Marco Brenner.
The two leaders are never truly threatened by the chasers, and with 48 kilometres remaining the peloton gobbles up the group. As the rain starts to pour, the peloton slashes a maximum gap of 4:30 down to just one minute heading into the final 10 kilometres.
Narváez manoeuvres Meurisse into the lead on the finishing straight. With the peloton fast approaching, he launches from the Belgian’s wheel and powers to a clear-cut win.
Tadej Pogacar finishes 12th to keep a strong hold of the race lead.
