Race report
Paul Lapeira, Attila Valter, Romain Grégoire, Orluis Aular, Xandro Meurisse and Patrick Gamper go clear on the run-in to the Monte Ceneri, while Louis Vervaeke, Lenny Martinez and Nairo Quintana bridge across on the ascent. Once over the top, the peloton brings everyone back together.
The attacks keep coming, but it takes 35 kilometres before a move finally sticks as around ten riders join forces at the front. With a few more riders bridging across, the breakaway grows into a group of fourteen featuring Afonso Eulálio, Ewen Costiou, Romain Grégoire, Filippo Zana, Bart Lemmen, Emiel Verstrynge, Bauke Mollema, Milan Vader, Finlay Pickering, Chris Hamilton, Marco Schrettl, Marcel Camprubí, Fred Wright and Julian Alaphilippe.
As the race leaves the hilly section behind, the peloton is over 1 minute and a half down on the break. The gap then stretches to 3 minutes in the flat middle section before it falls back again to 1 minute and 20 seconds on the first of the two climbs in the finale.
On the first of the two climbs in the finale, the gap comes down to 1 minute and a half, after which Tadej Pogacar leads his teammate Jhonatan Narváez up the final climb. Only Mathias Vacek is able to follow, while Narváez is dropped just before the summit. The two then pick up Eulálio, who has been distanced from the breakaway.
Meanwhile, the breakaway has been whittled down to Emiel Verstrynge, Grégoire, Zana, Pickering, Lemmen and Camprubí, while Vacek and Pogačar are working well together in the background. However, they just fall short of making the junction.
Grégoire takes the final corner into the finishing straight in first position and immediately launches a powerful acceleration. He creates a gap straight away and powers to a dominant victory.
Pogacar crosses the line 4 seconds later and comfortably retains the overall lead.
