Race report
Laurens De Plus opens a gap on the Col du Pré before Georg Steinhauser, Carlos Rodriguez, Léo Bisiaux, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Harold Tejada and KOM leader Clément Braz Afonso bridge across to him. Geoffrey Bouchard bridges across a little later, while Kévin Vauquelin sets off in pursuit.
Just below the summit of the Col du Pré, Paul Seixas is dropped from the peloton, while Bouchard loses contact with the other attackers on the descent. He is then passed by Vauquelin, who successfully completes his bridge to the front.
Early on the Montée de Bisanne, Seixas decides he has had enough and abandons the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Higher up the climb, Bouchard fights his way back to the breakaway, only to be dropped again later on. Vauquelin and Bisiaux are also unable to live with the pace, but they manage to regain contact on the descent.
The peloton crested the Montée de Bisanne over 2 minutes down on the breakaway, also the maximum gap of the day, before reducing it to 30 seconds on the Col des Aravis.
Paret-Peintre makes an early attack on the final climb, before De Plus bridges up to him with Rodríguez on his wheel, but it only delays the inevitable, as Isaac del Toro catches them with 8.5 kilometres remaining to the summit. The rest of the GC contenders have already been distanced by that point.
Juan Ayuso drops Matteo Jorgenson, Tobias Halland Johannessen and Cristian Rodríguez a few kilometres later, but Del Toro is already long gone.
While Del Toro secures the overall victory alongside the stage win, Luke Tuckwell fights in the yellow jersey for all he is worth. The young Australian limits his losses and finishes the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes in second place, while Juan Ayuso completes the podium.
