Race report
By the Côte du Temple, the riders are already around halfway through the stage, and it is only then that a breakaway finally starts to form. Quinn Simmons, Jordan Jegat and Andrea Kron make the first move, before George Bennett, Pablo Castrillo, Raúl García Pierna, Mattéo Vercher, Jan Castellon, Marco Frigo, Sam Watson, Finn Fisher-Black and Lars Craps bridge across on the following climb, the Côte de Chougoirland.
Watson is forced to drop off the front after a crash, while the remaining attackers never see their lead stretch beyond 2 minutes. With 10 kilometres remaining, the gap has even fallen to under 30 seconds, yet the peloton fails to bring the breakaway back.
In Le Puy-en-Velay, Simmons outsprints Fisher-Black and Vercher, while Alex Baudin crosses the line 4 seconds with the rest of the peloton, holding his grip on the yellow jersey.
