Race report
Victor Campenaerts is clearly eager for the new season, launching a solo move straight from the start. He crests the first climb, Puerto de Madroño, more than 1 minute ahead of the peloton. The Belgian then sits up to wait for the peloton.
Luca Creti, Ryan Boulahoite, Josh Burnett, Ibai Azanza, Nicolás Alustiza, Dylan Vandenstorme and Lucas Towers then make a move, but the final climb – Puerto de las Abejas – they are joined by a reduced peloton with all big names on board.
With 50 kilometres to go, a new lead group takes shape: Jan Christen, Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda, Quinten Hermans, Luke Tuckwell, Josh Burnett, Iván Cobo, Nicolás Alustiza, Dylan Vandenstorme, Axel Zingle and the day’s first attacker, Victor Campenaerts. That attempt doesn’t last very long either.
Little of note happens in the remainder of the stage, leaving the final say to the fast men. Christophe Laporte seizes it to perfection on the slightly uphill finish. As a bonus, the Frenchman also takes the first leader’s jersey.
