Giro 2025 Route stage 14: Treviso – Nova Gorica

Giro d'Italia 2025Saturday, 24 May – Stage 14 of the Giro d’Italia remains as flat as a pancake until the riders cross into Slovenia in the final 45 kilometres. Could three small climbs, including one with 10 kilometres to go, derail a bunch sprint? The race totals 186 kilometres.

Starting venue Treviso, a city of 85,000 residents located about 30 kilometres north of Venice, is no stranger to the Giro. It’s the 14th time that the pink caravan departs from the historic city. The first occasion was back in 1927, while the most recent was in 2019. That stage finished in San Martino di Castrozza, where Esteban Chaves claimed victory.

It’s highly unlikely that Chaves will replicate his 2019 win, as the route couldn’t be more different. No mountains this time, just flat roads. The first 140 kilometres are virtually level, with the route following the Adriatic coastline from a distance.

Shortly after crossing into Slovenia, the riders tackle the Goniace San Martino, a 3.6-kilometre climb at 5.1%. After the descent, the peloton arrives at a local circuit between Nova Gorica (Slovenia) and Gorizia (Italy), which they’ll complete twice. Each lap features the Saver climb, a 600-metre test at 6.4%. Once they crest the Saver for the second time, only 7.5 kilometres remain to the finish.

Two years after WWII, Gorizia was divided between Italy and Nova Gorica in Yugoslavia. Today, the two cities essentially form a single trans-border town. The Italian part hosted a Giro finish five times, most recently in 2021. On that occasion, Victor Campenaerts outsmarted Oscar Riesebeek in a sprint-à-deux.
