Giro 2025 Route stage 1: Durazzo - Tirana

Giro d'Italia 2025Friday, 9 May – The Giro d’Italia kicks off with a 160-kilometre race featuring three climbs. The Surrel is tackled twice, as it is part of the finishing circuit. The Surrel ascends 6.9 kilometres at an average gradient of 4.6%, followed by an 11.3-kilometre descent to the finish line.

The Giro sets off from the port city of Durazzo – or, as the Albanians call it, Durrës – and opens with a pancake-flat section of 70 kilometres. The riders then face the climb to Gracen, which spans 13 kilometres and averages 5.1%.

After the descent, the route continues as before – so, on flat terrain. The first passage across the finish line happens with 44 kilometres remaining. Two identical local laps complete the course.

Each lap includes the Surrel, a 6.9-kilometre hill with an average gradient of 4.6%. However, that average is misleading, as the first part is a false flat before the third kilometre averages 8.3%.

The riders crest the Surrel for the second and last time with 11.3 kilometres remaining. This final section is all downhill.

The final intermediate sprint comes 112 kilometres into the race, with 6, 4, and 2 bonus seconds up for grabs; at the finish line, 10, 6, and 4 seconds await the first three riders.
