Race report
Nicolas Prodhomme, Jan Tratnik, and Georg Steinhauser set off on the Croce Serra, while Bart Lemmen and Mattia Cattaneo bridge across. Tratnik loses contact, and the remaining four reach the summit 35 seconds before the peloton.

At the foot of the Col Tzecore, the four are joined by a large group, including Antonio Tiberi, Pello Bilbao, Romain Bardet, Carlos Verona, Igor Arrieta, Chris Harper, Louis Meintjes, and Christian Scaroni. The latter takes the most mountain points at the summit.

In the final kilometres of the Col Saint-Pantaléon, the breakaway is down to Tiberi, Verona, Arrieta, Prodhomme, Bilbao, Lemmen, and Meintjes. The GC contenders crest the summit 2 minutes behind them.

On the approach to the Col de Joux, Tiberi, Verona and Prodhomme head out together, before the Frenchman goes solo halfway up the climb. As the other two are reeled in by the GC group, Prodhomme crests the summit with a 1-minute buffer.

A chase never materialises, and on the final climb he extends his lead. The gap narrows again when Isaac del Toro responds to an attack from Richard Carapaz in the last kilometre. The other GC contenders can’t follow, but it doesn’t spoil Prodhomme’s party.

Del Toro convincingly beats Carapaz in the sprint for second place, with the other GC riders crossing the line 24 seconds later.
