Race report
The breakaway initially includes Timo Kielich, Sylvain Moniquet, Dries De Bondt, Enzo Paleni, Kim Heiduk, Jacopo Mosca, and Gianmarco Garofoli. After 30 kilometers, Mads Pedersen, Ethan Hayter, Francesco Busatto, Carlos Verona, Jon Barrenetxea, and Manuele Tarozzi manage to bridge across. Another 10 kilometers later, Martin Marcellusi, Fran Miholjević, Quinten Hermans, Jimmy Janssens, Alessandro Verre, Pello Bilbao, Andrea Vendrame, Kevin Geniets, Quentin Pacher, Rémy Rochas, Kevin Colleoni, Simon Clarke, Carlos Verona, Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda, Milan Vader, Chris Harper, Chris Hamilton, Mirco Maestri, and Wout van Aert turn the front of the race into a small peloton. As they hit the Colle delle Finestre, their advantage stands at 10 minutes.
Verre and Harper press on together on the climb. On the lower slopes, Richard Carapaz attacks from the peloton. Isaac Del Toro is quick to respond, with Simon Yates bridging across later.
After a series of probing attacks, Yates gets away and immediately opens up a solid gap. Behind him, Derek Gee joins Carapaz and Del Toro. But when the Ecuadorian accelerates, the Canadian loses ground again.
Yates keeps extending his lead over his rivals, helped by Del Toro’s refusal to work with Carapaz. The hesitation even leads to brief standstills, giving Gee the chance to latch back on.
Harper drops Verre on the gravel section of the Finestre before reaching the summit with a gap of a minute and a half.
Nearly 5 minutes after Harper, Yates arrives at the summit, with Del Toro and Carapaz trailing the Brit by 1 minute and 40 seconds.
On the descent, Yates catches up with his teammate Van Aert, who takes him under his wing. At the same time, the cooperation between Del Toro and Carapaz is virtually nonexistent, and in no time, they’re minutes behind.
Meanwhile, Harper solos to the stage win. Verre just manages to stay ahead of Yates, but the Brit won’t care — he wins the Giro on the stage over the Finestre, the very climb where he lost the overall in 2018.
