Race report
In rainy conditions, Wout van Aert, Joshua Tarling, Lorenzo Germani, Xabier Mikel Azparren, Jon Barrenetxea, Josef Cerny and Darren Rafferty form the breakaway after roughly 10 kilometres. Tarling crashes on the slippery road surface and is forced to abandon, while the remaining six tackle the first climb nearly 2 minute ahead of the peloton.
KOM leader Lorenzo Fortunato, Simon Guglielmi, Pello Bilbao, Sylvain Moniquet, Dries De Bondt, David Gaudu, Kim Heiduk, Simone Petilli, Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda, Felix Engelhardt, Gijs Leemreize, Davide Bais, Mattia Bais, Yannis Voisard, Alessio Martinelli, Fausto Masnada, Luca Covili and Christian Scaroni tracks the leaders down on the climb. At the summit, Fortunato extends his lead in the mountain classification, before the breakaway group opens up a maximum lead of 9 minutes in the following section of the race.
Halfway through, Alessio Martinelli drops out of the group after a crash, while Primoz Roglic calls it a day in the peloton.
The breakaway’s lead then drops to 6 minutes, but by the time they reach the foot of the Passo di Santa Barbara, the gap has stretched back out to 9 minutes.
The gap comes down fast as EF Education–EasyPost sets the pace on the climb. Juan Ayuso and Thymen Arensman drop off the back. At the same time, the breakaway’s advantage drops below 5 minutes.
With the breakaway still made up of Leemreize, Fortunato, Bilbao, Moniquet, Cepeda, Voisard and Scaroni, Bernal is also dropped from the peloton, but he manages to claw his way back.
Voisard strikes on the descent of the Santa Barbara and starts the final climb with a lead of half a minute. With 13 kilometres remaining, he is rejoined by Fortunato, Cepeda and Scaroni. Moments later, the three leave him behind, while Giulio Pellizzari attacks from the GC group.
In the final 10 kilometres of the San Valentino climb, the XDS-Astana show begins. First, Scaroni attacks, and then Fortunato rides up to his team-mate. On the lower slopes, Simon Yates accelerates – Isaac Del Toro and Richard Carapaz follow him like shadows, and Derek Gee bridges across later.
Carapaz takes over at the attack, prompting Gee to launch a move as well. Behind, Yates and Del Toro are joined by Michael Storer – but only briefly, as the pink jersey holder can’t keep up with the pace.
Meanwhile, Scaroni and Fortunato ride to the finish together, celebrating side by side as they cross the line – the former just a few centimetres ahead of the latter. Pellizzari arrives almost a minute later, followed 15 seconds after by Carapaz.
The Ecuadorian climbs to third in the GC, now 31 seconds behind Del Toro and 7 behind Yates.
