Race report
Attacks fly from the start, but it takes 70 kilometres for a large group to break clear. On board are KOM leader Lorenzo Fortunato, Pello Bilbao, Bart Lemmen, Mattia Cattaneo, Marco Frigo, Georg Steinhauser, Daniel Felipe Martínez, Louis Meintjes, Einer Rubio, Gianmarco Garofoli, Nicolas Prodhomme, Luke Plapp, Filippo Zana, Mathias Vacek, Davide De Pretto, and Nicola Conci. Their maximum lead reaches nearly 4 minutes.

Vacek, De Pretto, and Conci break away in the run-up to the Monte Grappa, but it all comes back together on the climb. There are several attacks on the ascent, but none of them stick.

With 2 kilometres to the summit, Egan Bernal accelerates in the peloton. Isaac Del Toro and Richard Carapaz bridge across, followed later by Thymen Arensman and Derek Gee. They crest the climb a little over a minute down on the leaders, while the other GC riders follow 30 seconds later.

After Fortunato is first over the top, Frigo goes solo on the descent. By the time they hit the valley floor, the chase groups have merged. Pello Bilbao, Nicolas Prodhomme, Filippo Zana, Filippo Fiorelli, Christian Scaroni, Carlos Verona, Gianmarco Garofoli, Romain Bardet, Bart Lemmen, and Florian Stork then track the lone leader down. The group tackles the climb to Dori more than 3 minutes ahead of the peloton.

Verona breaks away early on the ascent. Garofoli tries to join the move but doesn’t succeed. With 5 kilometres to go to the summit, Zana catches up to him.

Richard Carapaz attacks from the peloton. Most of the GC contenders follow, but Primoz Roglic is distanced. Meanwhile, Verona crests the summit 12 seconds ahead of the two chasers.

In the final phase, Verona pulls further and further away from Zana and Garofoli. In fact, the two are joined by the chasing group.

While Verona solos to victory, Stork attacks in the closing kilometre to take second place, with Scaroni winning the sprint for third.

The GC contenders finish shortly after, gaining a minute and a half on Roglic. Del Toro retains the overall lead ahead of Yates and Ayuso.
