Race report
Dries De Bondt and Sven Erik Bystrøm initiate the breakaway after 12 kilometres of action, while Lorenzo Milesi, Luca Mozzato, Fran Miholjević, Lorenzo Germani, Chris Hamilton, Mattia Bais, and Filippo Magli go with them. The nine open up a 2-minute lead.
Germani jumps clear before the climb to San Giovanni in Monte, and the rest of the breakaway is reeled in on the ascent. Wout van Aert is dropped by the hard-chasing favourites but manages to regain contact later, as does half the peloton. Meanwhile, Christian Scaroni bridges across to Germani.
The two riders open up a 1-minute gap over the peloton, but by the time they cross the line for the first time, it’s been halved.
On the climb to Arcugnano, Scaroni drops Germani. In the intermediate sprint for time bonuses, Juan Ayuso takes 4 seconds and Del Toro 2. Not long after, Scaroni is reeled in.
Romain Bardet attacks on the descent, and Mathias Vacek goes with him. They open up a 17-second lead, but only 8 remain by the time they reach the foot of the Monte Berico.
Once the two are caught, Mads Pedersen, Wout van Aert, and Isaac del Toro move to the front. Pedersen launches his sprint with 200 metres to go, and Van Aert follows. He gives it everything, but the man in purple proves simply too strong. Pedersen powers to his fourth stage win and tightens his grip on the maglia ciclamino.
Del Toro crosses the line in third and cements his lead in the overall standings.
