Race report
After 60 kilometres of full-on action, Wout Poels makes a move on a short climb, with Wilco Kelderman chasing him down
On the Alpe San Pellegrino, they are joined by Steven Kruijswijk, Pello Bilbao, Luke Plapp, Georg Steinhauser, Mathias Vacek, Nairo Quintana, Filippo Zana, Marco Frigo, Lorenzo Fortunato, and a number of other riders.
KOM leader Lorenzo Fortunato goes solo early on, with Plapp, Poels, Quintana and Bilbao launching the chase in the final 3 kilometres. Moments later, Egan Bernal attacks from the peloton, causing the pace to soar. All breakaway riders are reeled in – except for the five men still out front.
Fortunato crests the summit first, before the five attackers come together on the descent. They carve out a maximum lead of just under 3 minutes.
On the final climb, the Pietra di Bismantova, the breakaway is almost caught, and Richard Carapaz takes over the attack.
At the line, he still has 10 seconds to spare, while pink jersey Isaac Del Toro convincingly wins the sprint for second place ahead of Giulio Ciccone, earning 6 bonus seconds.
