Race report
It’s not until the second lap that a rider dares to attack. It’s Carina Schrempf, and the Austrian rider opens up a lead of 3 minutes.
As the gap drops below 1 minute, Julie Van de Velde bridges across to the lone leader. Shirin van Anrooij makes it a trio at the front, just after the race passes the midway point.
Van Anrooij forges ahead alone, until the peloton reels her in with 57 kilometres to go. Noemi Rüegg and Mireia Benito immediately launch a counter-attack.
Blanka Vas and Jasmin Liechti set off in pursuit. Inside the last 35 kilometres, Riejanne Markus, Antonia Niedermaier, Barbara Malcotti, Ginia Caluori, Évita Muzic, Mavi García, Niamh Fisher-Black and Magdeleine Vallieres rejoin the two, and they catch Rüegg and Benito with almost two laps remaining.
García, Fisher-Black and Vallieres distance the other attackers on the Côte de Kigali Golf, before Niedermaier regains contact on the cobbles of the Côte de Kimihurura. Markus makes the junction with one lap to go.
Marlen Reusser jumps clear of the peloton just before the finish and crosses the line 1 minute behind the five leaders. Malcotti joins her, while Kimberley Le Court and Elise Chabbey track her down.
Just like in the preceding lap, García, Fisher-Black and Vallieres drop the other attackers on the Côte de Kigali Golf. Chabbey rides clear of the other three chasers and bridges across to Markus. In the background, Demi Vollering, Elisa Longo-Borghini, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot and Kasia Niewiadoma join up with Reusser and Le Court.
Vallieres powers away from her two companions on the final time up the cobble, and rides solo to victory. Fisher-Black crosses the line 23 seconds later to take second place, with García claiming bronze a further 4 seconds back.
