Race report
Red Walters is the first attacker. On the opening climb of the Côte de Kigali Golf, the initiative shifts to Menno Huising, Anders Foldager, Fabio Christen, Ivo Oliveira, Julien Bernard, and Marius Mayrhofer. Raúl García Pierna makes it seven after a two-lap chase, before the gap hovers around the 3-minute mark for tens of kilometres.
After the first set of six local laps, the breakaway is reduced to Foldager, Oliveira, and Bernard. The trio begin the climb of Mont Kigali 2 minutes ahead of the peloton.
While Bernard distances his fellow escapees on the climb, Tadej Pogacar puts in a dig from the peloton. Juan Ayuso is the only rider able to follow. They reel in Bernard, and Isaac Del Toro bridges across on the descent.
Del Toro pushes the pace so hard on the Wall of Kigali that Ayuso is forced to drop.
The initial chase group features Bauke Mollema, Primoz Roglic, Mattias Skjelmos, Julien Bernard, Paul Seixas, Pavel Sivakov, Jai Hindley, Michael Matthews, Juan Ayuso, Marc Hirschi, Richard Carapaz, Ben Healy and Tom Skujins, but back on the Kigali circuit, they’re joined by a large group featuring the likes of Remco Evenepoel, Tom Pidcock, Thymen Arensman, Giulio Ciccone, Jay Vine, Mikkel Honoré, and Michael Storer. They cross the finish line with a 48 seconds deficit.
With five laps remaining, Ben Healy kicks off the chase. He’s joined by Honoré and Sivakov, as Evenepoel finds himself at the rear of the field following a bike change.
With 67 kilometres remaining, Pogacar distances Del Toro on the Côte de Kigali Golf. The Mexican drops back into the three-man chase group, before they are overtaken on the cobbles of the Côte de Kimihurura by Evenepoel, with a string of riders in tow.
Evenepoel pushes the pace, with only Skjelmose, Pidcock, Healy and Hindley able to hang on. The group crosses the line 1 minute down on Pogacar.
Evenepoel takes on most of the workload, dropping Hindley and Pidcock on the next passage over the Côte de Kimihurura.
Pogacar’s lead then hovers just above the 1-minute mark for tens of kilometres. It increases slightly in the final two laps before it starts to drop when Evenepoel sets off alone in pursuit inside the last 20 kilometres, although the gap never falls below 1 minute.
In the final lap, Pogacar puts the hammer down one last time to extend his lead and retain his world title.
