Vuelta 2022 Route stage 16: Sanlúcar de Barrameda - Tomares

Vuelta a España stage 16Tuesday 6 September - The rolling route leading from Sanlúcar de Barrameda to Tomares is 188.9 kilometres long. The 16th stage at La Vuelta is perfect for sprinters, one could argue. That is, if they survive the 1.5 kilometres climb at 6.1% inside te last 10 kilometres.

Three years ago the Ruta del Sol visited Sanlúcar de Barrameda, a town at the mouth of the Guadalquivir. That race went to an uphill finish in Alcalá de los Gazules, where Tim Wellens climbed to victory on the steep cobbles.

The route of stage 16 takes another direction. The riders head straight north to finish close to Seville. The finale in Tomares is pepped up by a short climb with 10 kilometres to go. It’s 1.5 kilometres long and rises at 6.1%.

Breakneck speeds are to be expected in the finale, as the roads rund predominanly false flat downhill.

The 2017 Vuelta also saw a Tomares finish. Matteo Trentin sprinted to victory that day.
