Race report
Tsgabu Girmay attacks at the foot of the first climb, Alt de Bot. Guillaume Martin and Ethan Hayter set off in pursuit and the three reach the summit 1 minute ahead of the peloton. Which they extend to 5 minutes.
Grmay pushes on alone with 125 kilometres remaining before Ibai Azurmendi, Pablo Castrillo, José Félix Parra, Julien Amezqueta, Héctor Carretero and Guillaume Martin rejoin him 10 kilometres later. Martin stops his efforts after collecting KOM points on Coll de Som.
Girmay attacks from the lead group on the finish climb, but obviously he is brought back when Evenepoel and Roglic take the reins. Soler goes with them.
Almeida comes out of thin air and overhauls the three in the last kilometre. Roglic and Evenepoel sprint to his wheel, but Soler can’t follow.
The two big stars in Catalunya, Roglic and Evenepoel, leave the Portugese behind for their fourth direct confrontation in five days. The Slovene turns out on top for the third time and crosses the line 6 seconds ahead of the World Champion. The GC leader is now 10 seconds clear.
Almeida moves up to third place, while Ciccone – who finishes the race eleventh – drops down to seventh.
