The queen stage is a brute, featuring eight ascents, of which only two are categorised. It begins straight from the start with the Passo Bordala. The 14.8 kilometres ascent at 6.9% is followed by an uncategorised climb to Vigolo Vattaro (8.4 kilometres at 6.1%). The climbing for KOM points is essentially over after cresting the third climb, the Passo Redebus, a 12.9-kilometre effort at 6.8%. The riders are only halfway through the race at that point.
The climbing for KOM points may be over, but certainly not the climbing tout court. Brusago, for example, sits on a hill reached via a 4.7-kilometre climb at an average of 6.9%. By the time the riders pass through the mountain village, there are still 44.8 kilometres to go, beginning with a descent of roughly half that distance.
After the downhill, three ramps round out the climbing: 2.7 kilometres at 7.7%, 800 metres at 7.5%, and 1.6 kilometres at 6.5%. The final of these leads to the intermediate sprint in Povo, leaving just under 10 kilometres to the finish in Trento – the first half downhill, the second half flat.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the bonus sprint in Povo comes with 6, 4 and 2 seconds.
