Race report

In an exciting opening phase, several breakaway attempts are made, and eventually a 12-men group featuring stage winners Tom Pidcock and Lennart Latsch manages to build a lead of more than 2 minutes.

Pidcock attacks with 4.5 kilometres to go on the first of the two last climbs. Juan Felipe Rodriguez follows his move and the two reach the summit 40 seconds ahead of the peloton.

With 5 kilometres of climbing remaining in the Tour of the Alps, the favourites’ group reels in Rodríguez as the last attacker, while race leader Giulio Pellizzari launches his move 2.6 kilometres from the summit. Thymen Arensman and Egan Bernal can follow for a few hundred metres before watching the Italian ride away.

As Bernal rides away from Arensman, the Dutchman is joined by Michael Storer. The Australian closes the gap to the Colombian champion with Arensman on his wheel, but when Storer keeps pushing the pace the Dutchman is dropped again. The 6 bonus seconds close to the top go to Pellizzari.

Early in the descent, Arensman quickly regains contact, but it makes little difference to the final result. Pellizzari flies to both the stage win and the overall victory, after which Bernal wins the sprint for second place half a minute later. The Colombian swaps places with Arensman to finish the Tour of the Alps in second overall, with the Dutchman in third.
