Race report
The peloton is still bunched on the first climb of the Palù del Fersina when Geraint Thomas gives it a go. Giulio Pellizzari joins the Tour de France Champion straight away, while Hugh Carthy tracks the two down in the last 3 kilometres.
The three open up a 3 minutes lead, but Luis Ángel Maté takes over on the second ascent. The peloton is bunched again with 11 kilometres left to climb.
Antonio Tiberi, third on GC, strikes 6.5 kilometres under the top. His team mate Wout Poels takes over when Tiberi is reeled in. He reaches the summit 16 seconds ahead of the GC group.
The GC group is bunched again inside the last 15 kilometres.
Romain bardet attacks on the steepest ramps of the Colle di Tenna. Ben O’Connor, Antonio Tiberi and Juan Pedro López follow his move straight away. Valentin Paret-Peintre and Wout Poels rejoin them on the plateau after the top before other riders regain contact also.
Wout Poels opens the spint with 300 metres to go and he runs out of steam on the slighlty uphill home straight. Aurélien Paret-Peintre uses the Dutchman as lead-out man to take the win, while Juan Pedro López crosses the line in ninth position to secure the overall win.
