Race report
De La Cruz, Bouchard, Gamper, Rangel, El Gouzi, Rastelli, Ravanelli, Fetter, Arrieta, Ballarin and Engelhardt open up a gap in the fast opening. Which they widen to more than 1 minute, but as there’s no agreement the breakaway is history after the first KOM.
Still no new break after 60 kilometres, but then it does happen. Amador, Arrieta, Caicedo, Fabbro, Felline, Goldstein, González, Henao, Iribar, Kudus, Palzer, Pinot, Prodhomme, Swift and Tesfatsion carve out a lead of almost 2 minutes. That’s all they get.
Goldstein, Iribar, Caicedo and Swift head out together in the last 14 kilometre before Goldstein accelerates on the first slopes of the finish climb. Caicedo tracks the Israelian down.
After a while Pinot, Tesfatsion and De la Cruz return at the front and the former winner pushes on alone in the last 10 kilometres.
The chasers are caught and ‘Superman’ López jumps off the front of the peloton. The Colombian gobbles up the Frenchman in the last kilometre and flies to victory.
Pinot finishes in second before Bardet outsprints Bilbao to take a time bonus of 4 seconds in third place. The Spaniard stays in the race lead, but the gap to Bardet is down to only 2 seconds.
